Another super easy maintenance step that some people probably forget – change your air filter!
Changing the filter only involves removing the seat to access the airbox, then replacing the paper element and cleaning and re-oiling (if desired) the foam element. Step-by-step instructions and a full video of the process is below.
Parts Needed:
Foam Air Filter Oil: Advance Auto, Amazon
(You can use any oil you can find, as long as it’s made for foam filters. K&N sells a cotton filter oil and cleaner at major auto parts stores, but that should not be used for foam filters!)
How to change your air filter:
- Remove the two side panels (3 x 5mm hex screws on each side) and the seat (2x 6mm hex screws)
- Remove the snorkel (small rubber part on top of the airbox.)
- Unscrew the 4 Philips-head screws holding the air box cover from the main air box.
- Carefully move the wiring harness out of the way, and wiggle out the air box cover.
- With the cover off, remove the foam element. Grab a bucket with some warm water mixed with dish soap, and carefully clean the dirt and old oil out of the filter element. After cleaning it a bit, let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
- While that’s soaking, remove the paper air filter element. Wipe out the airbox and snorkel in case there is dirt or dust accumulated inside any of the airway passages.
- Install the new paper air filter, rinse and completely dry the foam element.
- Spray the foam element with some Foam Air Filter Oil. You want to spray it just enough to have some sticky oil inside and around the outside of the foam element, but not so much that it’s dripping or sopping wet. Squeeze out any extra, and reinstall the foam.
- Reinstall the air box cover, be cautious of the rubber boot at top.
- Reinstall the snorkel (if desired) and then add the seat and panels back on your bike.

This was great info, gonna give it a shot next week, I live in a pretty dusty area and drive by our beaches quite a bit and get hit with sandstorms. Thanks for setting up this site. Much appreciated.
